Definition
放手 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to let go' — both literally (release your grip) and figuratively (give someone free rein, stop interfering). The verb 放 and object 手 can split: you can insert a measure word or modifier between them, e.g. 放一次手 ('let go once'), or use the resultative complement 放开了手 ('let go completely'). The figurative sense is common in work and parenting contexts: 放手让孩子自己做 ('let the child do it on their own').
