Definition
放任 means 'to let someone do whatever they want without intervening' — it carries a negative connotation, implying neglect or irresponsibility when you should have stepped in. Unlike the neutral 'let alone' or 'not interfere', 放任 suggests you had a duty to act but chose not to. It's often used with children's upbringing, bad behavior, or unchecked development.
