Definition
收敛 (shōu liǎn) has two main uses: (1) to restrain or curb one's emotions or behavior, and (2) in mathematics, for a sequence to converge. For the 'converge' sense, it is specific to math and abstract processes, unlike 汇合/汇聚 (huìhé/huìjù) which describe physical things like rivers or crowds coming together. The less common sense 'to dwindle' (e.g., anger) is gradual, unlike 绝迹 (juéjì 'completely vanish') or 熄灭 (xīmiè 'go out').
