Definition
擅 is a bound form (b.f.) in Chinese, meaning it cannot stand alone as an independent word. It appears in compound words, most commonly 擅长 (shàncháng, 'be good at') and 擅自 (shànzì, 'do something without authorization'). The English gloss 'good at' only covers the first sense; the second sense is equally important for advanced learners.
