据 (jù) is a formal preposition meaning 'according to', used to cite a source of information (e.g., reports, surveys, news). It is more concise and literary than 根据 (gēn jù), which is the everyday choice in both speech and writing. For following rules or procedures, use 按照 (àn zhào); for compliance, 依照 (yī zhào).
