Definition
挥手 means 'to wave one's hand' (as a greeting or farewell). It is a separable verb (离合词): the verb 挥 and the noun 手 can split when inserting aspect markers, measure words, or complements — e.g. 挥了挥手 ('waved a few times'), 挥一下手 ('wave once'). You cannot put an object after 挥手 directly; the person you wave to is introduced with 向 or 跟: 向他挥手 ('wave to him').
