Definition
挡 (dǎng) is a general verb for physically blocking or shielding something, like a tree blocking the road or an umbrella blocking the sun. It is broader than 拦 (lán), which specifically means to stop or flag down a moving person/vehicle, and 遮挡 (zhē dǎng), which emphasizes covering from view or light. 挡 can also mean to resist, but 抵挡 (dǐ dǎng) is more specific for withstanding force.
