Definition
挂牌 is a separable verb (离合词) with two dominant modern meanings: (1) for professionals (doctors, lawyers) to officially open for business — literally 'hang up a shingle'; (2) for a company to be listed on a stock exchange. It can also mean to list a property for sale. The verb 挂 and object 牌 can split when inserting duration, aspect markers, or measure words: 挂了牌, 挂过牌, 挂一次牌.
