Definition
挂名 is a separable verb (离合词) literally meaning 'to hang up a name'. It describes putting one's name on a position or title without real responsibility or active involvement — often used for honorary or titular roles. As a verb-object, you can split it: 挂 + (complement/measure word) + 名, e.g., 挂个名 ('to put in a name'), 挂上了名 ('have one's name listed'). It's also used attributively before nouns to mean 'nominal' or 'in name only', as in 挂名教授.
