Definition
抬举 literally means 'to lift and raise', and carries the social meaning of showing favor, appreciation, or promotion to someone. It's often used in the fixed expression 不识抬举 (bù shí tái jǔ, 'not know how to appreciate a favor — to be ungrateful'). You typically use it in contexts where someone is being given special recognition or opportunity, and the receiver's response is implied to be either grateful or disrespectful.
