投机 (tóujī) as a verb means 'to speculate' — investing in markets for short-term profit, often with risk. It's less specific than 炒股 (chǎo gǔ), which refers strictly to stock trading, and less colloquial than 炒 (chǎo) for speculative hype. As an adjective, 投机 also means 'congenial' or 'opportunistic' — two very different senses depending on context.
