Definition
扮 (bàn) covers several related actions: dressing up as someone or something, playing a role, and putting on an expression. Compared to 扮演 (bàn yǎn 'play the role of'), which is specific to acting a role, 扮 is broader and includes temporary disguise (扮成) and making faces (扮鬼脸). 装扮 (zhuāng bàn) leans more toward dressing up for show or decoration, while 扮 focuses on the act of appearing as something else.
