打败 (dǎ bài) is the common, everyday verb for 'to defeat, to beat' in competitions, battles, or overcoming difficulties. It is more colloquial than 击败 (jī bài) and 战胜 (zhàn shèng), which are more formal and often used in written reports or grand contexts. Note that 失败 (shī bài) means 'to fail/to be defeated' — the opposite perspective.
