Definition
打结 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to tie a knot'. The verb 打 and the noun 结 can split when adding measure words, complements, or objects: 打一个结 ('tie one knot'), 打成了结 ('tied into a knot'). You cannot put an object directly after 打结; the material (绳子, 线) comes before or is introduced with 用. Also used figuratively for getting tangled (in hair, thread).
