才干 (cái gàn) means practical competence and ability, especially in work or real tasks — the capacity to get things done effectively. Compared to the general 能力 (ability) or the more innate talent-oriented 才能, 才干 emphasizes hands-on, applied skill. It contrasts with 才华, which focuses on artistic or literary talent.
