情节 (qíngjié) refers to the plot or storyline of a story, film, or play, and also to the specific circumstances or details of a real event, accident, or case. It is distinct from 剧情 (jùqíng), which is limited to the plot of a drama or TV show; and from 情况 (qíngkuàng), which means a general situation or state of affairs without a narrative sequence.
