Definition
怵 is a bound form (b.f.) meaning 'frightened' or 'intimidated'. It rarely appears alone in modern Chinese; you'll mostly encounter it in the disyllabic word 发怵 (fāchù, 'to feel intimidated') or in the chengyu 怵目惊心 (chùmù jīngxīn, 'shocking to the eye and alarming to the heart'). As a bound form, it must attach to another morpheme to form a word.
