Definition
志愿军 is a historical term referring to a volunteer army, most famously the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (中国人民志愿军) that fought in the Korean War (1950–1953). It is a fixed proper noun in modern Chinese, not a general term for any volunteer military force — you would not use it for a modern volunteer corps or NGO peacekeepers. The word carries strong historical and patriotic connotations in PRC discourse.
