Definition
得势 (dé shì) is a separable verb-object (离合词) meaning 'to gain power, influence, or the upper hand'. It is often used in political, competitive, or strategic contexts. As a separable verb, the two characters can split: 得 can take aspect markers or complements (得了势 'gained power'), and 势 can be preceded by modifiers (得大势 'gain great power').
