待机 is a verb-object separable word (离合词) meaning 'await an opportunity' or 'bide one's time'. In modern usage, it also commonly refers to 'standby mode' for electronic devices. As a separable verb, when adding aspect markers, durations, or measure words, the syllables split: for example, 待了一天的机 ('have been on standby for a whole day').
