Definition
当事 (dāng shì) is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to take something seriously' or 'to treat something as important'. It's often used in the negative or with a degree adverb, as in 不当回事 ('don't take it seriously') or 很当事 ('take it very seriously'). The object or measure word can split the syllables: 当一回事 ('take it as a big deal'). This is a relatively formal or emphatic expression, common in spoken Chinese when criticizing someone's attitude.
