Definition
归国 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to return to one's country'. It is more formal than the everyday 回国 and is often used in official or written contexts (e.g., news, biographies). As a verb-object compound, you can insert aspect markers or measure words between the two syllables: 归了国 ('returned to the country'), 归过一次国 ('returned to the country once'). The object (the country) is already part of the word, so you don't add another object after it.
