Definition
开除 means to expel someone from a school, organization, or team (often for serious misconduct) or to fire an employee (for disciplinary reasons). In the employment sense, it is more punitive than 解雇 or 辞退, which are neutral terms for dismissal. Unlike 驱逐 (to expel from a place), 开除 terminates membership.
