Definition
开外 is a colloquial suffix attached directly after a number (usually tens or hundreds) to mean 'over, more than'. It's most common with age (五十开外 'over fifty') and distance (一公里开外 'over a kilometer away'), but can also be used with other quantities. The number always comes before 开外, and the phrase is often followed by 了 to indicate the threshold has been passed.
