Definition
店 (diàn) is a general word for 'shop, store' and often appears as a suffix in compound names (书店, 水果店). 商店 (shāngdiàn) is the full, more formal term for a place of retail; 店 is shorter and can stand alone, but 商店 is preferred in formal contexts or when you need to be more specific.
