Definition
幼儿 refers specifically to a young child between toddler age and early school age (roughly 2–6 years old). It is narrower than the English word "child" (孩子), which covers all ages. 幼儿 is commonly used in educational and developmental contexts, such as 幼儿教育 'preschool education' and 幼儿园 'kindergarten'. The English gloss "infant" is misleading — infants (babies under 1 year) are called 婴儿.
