Definition
巴士底狱 (Bāshìdǐ Yù) is the Chinese name for the Bastille, a fortress and prison in Paris that was stormed on July 14, 1789, marking the start of the French Revolution. In Chinese historical texts it appears as a symbol of the old regime. The pinyin provided (bā shì de) appears to be incomplete; the standard pronunciation is bā shì dǐ yù (with 狱 pronounced yù).
