差点儿 (chà diǎn r) means 'almost, nearly' and is the everyday spoken word for something that almost happened but didn't. It's more colloquial than 几乎 (jī hū, more formal/written) and more specific to narrowly avoiding an event than 差不多 (chà bu duō, which also means 'about the same').
