Definition
崭 (zhǎn) is a bound morpheme (b.f.) that appears only in formal or literary compounds, never alone. It carries the sense of 'towering, outstanding' in set phrases like 崭露头角 (zhǎn lù tóu jiǎo, 'to stand out, to show one's talent'), and in the common compound 崭新 (zhǎnxīn) it means 'brand new'. You cannot use it as a free-standing word; it always attaches to another element.
