Definition
岸 (àn) is the general word for the land along the edge of any body of water — a river, lake, or sea. 海岸 (hǎi àn) is specifically the coast of the sea or ocean; 海滩 (hǎi tān) is a sandy beach. Use 岸 when the type of shore isn't important.
