Definition
小试 is a verb phrase meaning 'to make a casual trial' or 'to try one's hand at something'. It often appears in the fixed expression 小试牛刀 ('to show a bit of one's skill'). Historically it also refers to the entry-level civil examination in imperial China, but that noun sense is not covered here.
