Definition
寄信 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to mail/send a letter'. The verb 寄 and the object 信 can be separated by measure words, aspects, or duration (e.g., 寄了一封信 'mailed one letter'). You cannot place the recipient directly after 寄信; use 给 to introduce the recipient: 寄信给朋友.
