寂 (jì) is a bound morpheme (cannot stand alone) meaning 'quiet' or 'lonely'. It appears in compound words such as 寂寞 (jìmò, lonely), 寂静 (jìjìng, quiet), and 沉寂 (chénjì, still/silent). You cannot use 寂 by itself as a word; it must be combined with another character.
