Definition
宫 (gōng) is the basic word for 'palace', used in historical names like 故宫 and modern cultural centers (少年宫, 文化宫). It is more general than 宫殿 (gōngdiàn), which denotes a grand palatial hall, and 宫廷 (gōngtíng), which refers to the imperial court as an institution. In certain proper names, 宫 can also refer to a temple (e.g., 雍和宫), but the everyday temple word is 庙 (miào) or 寺庙 (sìmiào).
