学堂 is a historical term for a school, especially one in pre-modern China or the early 20th century. It is often used in historical contexts, literature, or the names of old institutions. Today, 学校 (xuéxiào) is the common word for 'school', but 学堂 retains a nostalgic or traditional flavor.
