Definition
嫉 is a bound morpheme (b.f.) that cannot stand alone as a word. It carries the meanings of 'envy' and 'hatred' and appears as the first element in compounds such as 嫉妒 (jídù, jealousy), 嫉恨 (jíhèn, envy and hatred), and the chengyu 嫉恶如仇 (jí è rú chóu, to hate evil like an enemy). When you see 嫉, it always attaches to another character to form a two-character word or set phrase.
