Definition
媳妇 (xí fu) means 'daughter-in-law' and, in northern colloquial Chinese, 'wife' (especially of a younger man). As a term for 'wife', it is more regional than the nationwide colloquial 老婆 (lǎo po) and less formal than 妻子 (qī zi). As 'young married woman', it contrasts with 姑娘 (gū niang, 'girl/unmarried') and 丫头 (yā tou, 'girl/maidservant').
