Definition
姨 specifically refers to one's mother's sister (maternal aunt). Unlike 姑姑 (father's sister) and 阿姨 (a general polite term for any woman of one's parents' generation), 姨 is used only for blood-related maternal aunts. It can also be used as a respectful address for a woman of one's mother's generation.
