姥姥 (lǎolao) means maternal grandmother (mother's mother), while 奶奶 (nǎinai) is the paternal grandmother (father's mother). Both 姥姥 and 外婆 (wàipó) mean maternal grandmother, but 姥姥 is more common in northern China and feels more informal, whereas 外婆 is used more in southern China and is neutral.
