Definition
委任 (wěirèn) is a formal verb meaning 'to appoint' or 'to assign a position.' In modern general usage it's the same as 任命, but with a slightly more official tone. Historically and in Taiwan's civil-service system, 委任 also refers to the lowest of four official ranks (contrast with 简任, 荐任, 荐任 — actually 简任, 荐任, 委任). As an HSK 7 verb, you'll see it in contexts of official assignments or delegating authority.
