Definition
姑娘 (gū niang) is the most common word for 'girl' or 'young woman' in everyday speech. It can also mean 'daughter' informally, but 女儿 (nǚ ér) is the standard term for daughter. Compared to 女生 (nǚ shēng, 'female student') and 少女 (shào nǚ, 'teenage girl'), 姑娘 is broader and more polite for addressing a young lady.
