夸奖 (kuā jiǎng) is the everyday word for 'to praise, to compliment' someone's effort or achievement. It is more colloquial than 表扬 (biǎo yáng, formal commendation) and 称赞 (chēng zàn, literary praise), and avoids the possible negative meaning of 夸 (kuā, which can also mean 'to boast').
