Definition
夜叉 (yè chà) is a term from Indian mythology and Buddhism, referring to a type of spirit or demon. In Buddhist contexts, a yaksha can be a malevolent, man-eating demon or a benevolent guardian spirit (护法神). In modern Chinese, it is also used as a metaphor for a hideous, ferocious person. The word has strong cultural and religious connotations, so its meaning depends heavily on context — from temple guardian statues to insults about someone's appearance or temper.
