Definition
多元 (duō yuán) means 'diverse, pluralistic' and emphasizes multiple distinct elements or dimensions, often used in formal/academic contexts like 多元文化 (multicultural) or 多元化 (diversification). It differs from 多样 (duō yàng), which simply means 'varied, of many kinds' and is more general. 多元 also has a specialized mathematical sense of 'multivariate' (e.g., 多元变量).
