外公 (wài gōng) means 'maternal grandfather' — the father of one's mother. It contrasts with 爷爷 (yé ye), which is the paternal grandfather (father's father). 外公 is the standard colloquial term; 姥爷 (lǎo ye) is a common regional variant, especially in northern China.
