夕阳 (xī yáng) refers to the setting sun itself — the sun disk as it goes down. Unlike 黄昏 (huáng hūn 'dusk, nightfall'), which describes the time period, and 晚霞 (wǎn xiá 'sunset glow'), which describes the colorful clouds, 夕阳 focuses on the sun. It is often used in poetic or scenic descriptions.
