处罚 (chǔ fá) is a formal verb for official punishment by authorities (e.g., traffic violations, company rules). It is more formal than 罚 (fá), which is a general term for any penalty. 惩罚 (chéng fá) is broader (physical/psychological), 制裁 (zhì cái) refers to official sanctions, and 处分 (chǔ fèn) is organizational discipline.
