Definition
壤 is a bound form (b.f.) meaning 'soil' or 'earth', but it never appears alone in modern Chinese — it only occurs as a morpheme in compound words like 土壤 (soil), 接壤 (to border on), and 天壤之别 (a world of difference). You cannot use 壤 as a standalone noun; instead, use 土 or 泥土 for the independent word 'soil'.
