Definition
填补 (tián bǔ) means 'to fill a gap, vacancy, or deficiency', often in an abstract or systematic sense (e.g., filling a position, a research gap, or compensating for a lack). It is more formal and specialized than 填 (tián), which is used for concrete filling (holes, containers, or forms). Unlike 补 (bǔ) 'to repair or supplement', 填补 focuses on making something complete by supplying what was missing.
