Definition
坦荡 has two related but distinct uses. Literally it describes a road or path that is broad and level (平坦开阔). More commonly in modern Chinese, it describes a person's character — open-hearted, magnanimous, and free from pettiness or hidden motives. The figurative sense is the one you'll hear most often in conversation and writing.
